When in June 1940 Hitler’s army marched into Paris, Frenchmen were faced with a choice between collaboration, peace, and shame on the one hand; resistance, glory and death on the other. Their leaders elected to collaborate under Petain, but each man, as best he could, steered his own difficult course. There were heroes and there were villains, but mainly there were those who neither acted nor decided, but endured. The Sorrow and the Pity (Le Chagrin et la Pitie), Marcel Ophuls' powerful documentary of those four years of occupation, was widely acclaimed in cinemas throughout the world. Ophuls talked with German soldiers and members of the Vichy government, with resisters, with farmers, with shopkeepers and spies, with politicians like Anthony Eden and Pierre Mendes-France, with men imprisoned by the Germans and others victimised by France's liberators. By juxtaposing the personal testimony of a people looking back upon their history with contemporary newsreels and photographs, The Sorrow and the Pity presents the unforgettable experience of humanity confronting itself. This book gives a translation of the filmscript into English together with many images from the production. Also included is an introduction by Stanley Hoffman plus biographies of the characters interviewed in the film by Mireille Johnstone. There is also extra material on the Massilia episode, the British bombardment of Mers-el Kebir and the French Resistance by Mireille Johnston.
